CHANGES IN THE BAND

Many of you have heard by now that Fred Velez is the Interim Director of Bands at TCU. There is also a national search being conducted for a Director of Bands. Please give your support to Fred and the Band during this time! Thank you!

WORDS FROM THE VICE PRES

Here we are in the middle of another hot summer, looking back at the success of last year’s season and Sun Bowl victory, and looking forward to next season and all its fun and glory. Remember how we all looked forward to the cooler fall weather and the new marching season… Remember how we all looked forward to the special time together in Band Camp before school started… And remember Prof and Mrs. J having us over to their house for a party and dinner after Camp? We all have a lot of great memories from that time together. By now, most, if not all of you have received the letter from Prof and Mrs. J sharing their terrible news of Mrs. J’s cancer. As a physician, I am aware of the difficult decisions they have had to make, and the concern and love they have for all of us in this time of sorrow. I have spoken to them both recently and they again shared with me how they loved all of us like their own kids. The memories that they have of all of us are shining brightly and help them get through each day. They have chosen to do the hospice program and stay at home in their own surroundings, making Mrs. J as comfortable as possible. Your letters of concern and support would continue to remind them of the good old days at TCU Band. Last year when the Jim and Wyn Jacobsen Fund at TCU was begun, Prof and Mrs. J were ecstatic that their former students and friends would contribute to this outstanding cause for the TCU Band. Given the current circumstances, I can think of no greater way to honor them. Please keep Prof and Mrs. J in your prayers during this difficult time.

PRESIDENT'S PARTING THOUGHTS

A few years ago, Charlie Hoffman (a member of the Band of Fame) was talking to me about the Ex-Bandsmen Association. We both thought that it would really be great if someone could devote a good portion of their time towards making this organization really viable and strong. Both of us thought that we had the Alumni base (my guess is that there are around 3,000 Ex-Bandsmen out there) to make it strong. All that was needed was someone to step in and make it happen. I’m not saying that I’m that person, but this past year, I have enlisted the help of many of you. You may have not even realized I was asking for help, but I was. I’m grateful for the many people that stepped forward and said, "I want to help! How can I help?" Many of the people involved are not even Ex-Bandsmen, but they wanted to help us and did! That’s what it’s all about- getting everyone to help just a little so that a lot can be done. A little bit of everyone’s time really adds up! At the Annual Homecoming meeting I will give you all a complete update on all of the activities that have taken place over the past year. You will be surprised and proud!

COL. RAY TOLER INJURED IN
LITTLE ROCK PLANE CRASH

Most of you know that Col. Ray Toler is the Director of the Texas A&M Band and is a TCU Ex-Bandsmen and Band of Fame member. He was on board the A/A flight that crashed in Little Rock earlier this summer and was the ICU of a Little Rock hospital afterward. Please keep him in your prayers as he recovers.

DOES ITS REALLY MATTER
WHEN
YOU WERE IN BAND?

For some strange reason we seem to forget that we are all Ex-Bandsmen, and that our tie to TCU was that we were in Band. Some want to associate themselves with a particular year or Band Director. There’s nothing wrong with that. When the Ex-Bandsmen Association was founded, it was set up with the understanding that anyone that had ever been in Band was a member. It didn’t and doesn’t matter that your director was Lew Gillis, Leon Breeden, Jim Jacobsen or Rob Foster… It doesn’t matter if you were in the Band in the 1930’s, 50’s, 70’s or 90’s; we’re all Ex-Bandsmen! We all have experienced the thrill of marching on the football field at half-time, playing the rain, snow, sun, turning the wrong way or playing a wrong note. We’ve seen dozens of football games and half-time shows. This is what makes us unique! Let’s not forget it! Let’s see everyone at Homecoming this year!
